Description
Acacia dealbata, known as the Winter Mimosa or Florist's Mimosa, stands apart from the common acacia (of the Robinia genus). This evergreen bush is both vigorous and sensitive to severe cold and brightens gardens from late winter in mild climates. It offers a generous flowering of small, bright yellow pompon-shaped flowers with an unmistakable fragrance. Its finely divided, vibrant green foliage remains elegant even in winter. Grown in a large pot, this mimosa can easily be overwintered in colder regions. Best sown in spring and cultivated in well-drained, non-calcareous soil, in full sun.
Native to Australia, Acacia dealbata mimosa exhibits rapid growth. This botanical species was introduced to Europe in 1771. It has particularly thrived on the French Riviera, where acidic soils and the Mediterranean climate provide ideal conditions. However, its proliferation in this region has now made it an invasive species, posing a threat to local biodiversity. This small tree, with a single trunk and a dense, spreading silhouette, reaches an average height of 7 metres and a width of 6 metres when mature in open ground. Its flowering, from January to March, releases a well-known fragrance: a blend of fresh, herbaceous notes with a powdery honey-like undertone. These make excellent cut flowers. Its feathery leaves, divided into tiny leaflets, enhance its exotic charm.
Hardy down to -10°C (for the stump), this florist's mimosa still prefers milder climates, even very dry summers. In open ground, it can be planted as a specimen, in hedges, or in rows for its screening potential. It pairs well with other exotic-looking bushes, other Mimosas of course, but also escallonias and Olearias, for example. In containers, it remains smaller and can be protected from frost in a conservatory or greenhouse, much like citrus trees. This allows its beauty to be enjoyed even in colder regions. A reliable choice for adding a sunny, fragrant touch to your garden or terrace, even in the depths of winter.

Planting and care
To successfully sow Acacia dealbata, proceed in spring, between March and May, when temperatures stabilise and the risk of frost has passed.

Seed preparation: Mimosa seeds have a hard coat that requires preparation to facilitate germination. Soak them in very hot water for 5 seconds, then immediately transfer them to ice-cold water and leave them to soak for 48 hours.

Sowing: Sow the seeds in a light, well-draining substrate, kept moist. Place the seedlings in a warm environment, ideally between 20 and 25°C, to encourage germination, which usually occurs within 8 to 10 days.

Transplanting: When the seedlings have developed 4 leaves, transplant them into individual pots. Wait until the risk of frost has passed before planting them out in the ground or continue growing them in pots.
Cultivation: Plant mimosa in a sunny spot, sheltered from prevailing winds, with well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Once well-rooted, mimosa tolerates drought well. Water moderately, avoiding excess water, which can lead to root rot. Acacia dealbata can withstand temperatures down to -10°C, especially when planted in a sheltered spot and very well-draining soil. In case of severe frost, the tree's aerial parts may be destroyed, but the stump can produce new shoots in spring.
