More information

This pelargonium distinguishes itself from the botanical species with its highly cut foliage that emits a strong mint fragrance. Description

Pelargonium 'White Graveolens' is a variety closely related to the highly fragrant botanical species called P. graveolens. Throughout summer, it displays the same lovely small flowers grouped in umbels, with a candy-pink colour veined with garnet. It forms an evergreen shrub with the same soft and velvety leaves, but they are strongly dissected and chiselled in this variety. Its signature fragrance is clearly menthol. The slightest touch fills the air with this fresh mint note. This pelargonium grows quickly in light and fertile soils, in full sun. It should be protected from frost during winter.

Growing in two separate regions of South Africa, as well as in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, where the climate is characterised by hot and humid summers and mild winters, Pelargonium graveolens is a perennial shrub belonging to the geranium family. In nature, the plant prefers mountainous areas, especially damp ravines. Its bushy habit is supported by hairy stems, which lignify over time, allowing the plant to reach 50 to 60cm (20 to 24in) in all directions (or even more). Its highly ornamental foliage is composed of dissected and chiselled leaves, measuring 4cm (2in) in length and 6cm (2in) in width. They are soft and velvety to the touch, thanks to the presence of numerous hairs secreting a highly aromatic essential oil. The aroma of 'White Graveolens' is a clear mint fragrance. Flowering occurs from June to October, in the form of heads containing 10 to 15 small light pink flowers measuring 15mm (1in). They are perhaps less spectacular than those of classic hybrids, whether perennial or annual, but more authentic. The 2 upper petals, veined with garnet, are larger than the 3 lower petals. The plant is fertile and produces some fruits, unlike the hybrids of the Rosat group, which are mostly sterile.

Plant Pelargonium 'White Graveolens' in a place where you can touch it and enjoy its fragrance. It looks wonderful in a pot in the house, or on a patio. It also works well in the ground, planted along a path. Pelargonium is a good companion for roses, lavenders, and honeysuckles for a fragrant garden. After rainfall one day, we came across a bed of scented geraniums and spent a long time immersing ourselves in a symphony of delicate scents. In mild and humid climates, the plant grows forms a beautiful shrub that requires very little maintenance.

Its leaves are used in perfumery to extract an aromatic essence. The edible leaves are used in fruit salads and desserts. They are also used in potpourri.

Our young plants in plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant in open ground after the last frosts. Choose a sunny location to promote flowering. You can also plant them in pots placed in a sheltered location, which you can bring out in May. Scented geraniums require well-drained soil, but not necessarily very rich. They will tolerate slightly chalky soil. Water moderately. In pots, regular watering is necessary in summer. You can keep your plants by bringing them indoors under a veranda or a cold greenhouse in winter. They can withstand temperatures of around -3°C (26.6°F), but they will not survive winter in the garden, except by the seaside.
