Description

The Deveci Pear Tree is a variety of medium vigour. Widely cultivated in Turkey, it produces enormous fruits weighing up to 1.5 kg. Their shape is similar to Asian varieties, round. Their texture and taste are more similar to European varieties. Their yellow-green skin is tinged with pink-red in the sun, and their white flesh is firm and juicy. Harvest takes place in mid-October. The Deveci Pear Tree is not self-fertile.

The pear tree is a tree native to central Asia, cultivated in China for 6,000 years. It was introduced to Europe around the 6th century. While its development in the Middle Ages remained limited, there were already 200 varieties during the Renaissance. Since then, the number of varieties has continued to increase. The Deveci Pear Tree is a Turkish variety. It grew in forests and was cultivated for a long time away from the eyes of nurserymen. It is now widely cultivated in Turkey.

If it is not frost-sensitive, the Deveci Pear Tree will appreciate protected and sunny locations, avoiding frosty and windy situations. Easy to grow, it likes damp and deep soils, but it dislikes excessively draining and calcareous soils. In winter, give it a handful of wood ash, rich in potash, to improve flowering and fruit quality.
Its semi-spreading habit gives it a tall silhouette with a trunk, then spread out harmoniously. This habit facilitates harvesting and naturally improves air circulation around the tree, making it less susceptible to diseases. Its oval-shaped leaves, finely toothed on the edge, have a petiole as long as the lamina and measure about 8 to 9 cm (3 to 4in).
Its white flowering occurs in March-April. Its flowers are formed by 5 white petals. They are not self-fertile. It is therefore necessary to plant another pear tree nearby, preferably within a radius of 50 m (164ft). Its main pollinator is the William's variety. It is also a very good pollinator.
This variety produces enormous fruits, weighing up to 1.5 kg. Their shape is similar to Asian varieties, rounder. Their texture and taste are more similar to European varieties. Their yellow-green skin is tinged with pink-red in the sun. Their white flesh is firm and juicy.

Planting and care

Plant the Deveci Pear Tree in a sunny location, in acidic or neutral soil, moist but not excessive. Ensure drainage in the planting hole with a thin layer of gravel. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, so that the entire root ball is moistened by capillarity. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole and fill with soil mixed with compost. Do not bury the graft union. Firmly tamp down the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water thoroughly.

In winter, you can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, to improve fruiting.
