Description

Mammillaria baxteriana, now reclassified as Mammillaria petrophila, is a small spiny indoor cactus that can flower indoors. It has a slightly flattened globular habit and many dark brown prickles. Place it on a very sunny windowsill or on a shelf in a light-filled office.

This botanical species belongs to the Cactaceae family. It is native to Mexico, more specifically Baja California Sur, where it grows in arid areas, among rocks and dry scrub. The name Mammillaria baxteriana is now considered a synonym of Mammillaria petrophila by major botanical references; according to floras and collections, you may also encounter Neomammillaria bax

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water moderately, allowing the growing medium to dry out between waterings. In winter, it is essential to reduce watering significantly and keep the plant dry, especially if it is kept at cooler temperatures (10-15 °C).

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Preferably repot at the beginning of spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the plant becomes too large for its pot. It does not mind being a little cramped, on the contrary.
Use a mix of succulent compost with drainage materials such as coarse sand or perlite. Make sure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a special liquid feed for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, e.g. NPK 2-7-7) once a month during the growing period.

Houseplant care

No pruning is necessary. If a stem breaks, let it dry for 15 days, then propagate it by planting it in a very well-draining substrate.

Disease and pest advice

If infested with scale insects, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Also ensure that the substrate is well-draining to avoid excess moisture.
