Jovibarba sobolifera 'Green Globe', sometimes called Sempervivum soboliferum 'Green Globe', is a lovely species of houseleek with plump rosettes of beautiful light green, tinged with red. Its star-shaped yellowish flowers bloom in the summer, at the heart of mature rosettes. This small alpine succulent plant is very hardy and grows into a geometric carpet that blends beautifully with rocks. It thrives in a not-too-arid rockery, between the stones of a wall or in a pot.
Jovibarba sobolifera 'Green Globe' is a horticultural cultivar. This plant comes from a botanical species indiscriminately called Sempervivum soboliferum, Diopogon soboliferum, Sempervivum hirtum and many others, depending on the botanists. Jovibarba, closely related to Sempervivum (houseleeks), are endemic to the mountainous regions of southeastern Europe. These succulent perennials of the family Crassulaceae mainly grow in mountainous areas. Jovibarba sobolifera is spontaneous in the Eastern and Southern Alps, the Carpathians, and the western Balkans up to northern Albania. It is often found at low altitudes on dry sandy soils, mainly in pine forests, but also along rocky riverbanks, in non-calcareous soil.
Beard of Jupiter 'Green Globe' has thick, long roots that penetrate deeply into the crevices of rocks, ensuring good attachment to the walls while drawing water from deep down. The plant slowly forms colonies of juxtaposed rosettes of different sizes, reaching 2 to 5 cm in diameter at maturity. Over time, this plant can form a dense clump spreading over 40 cm on the ground, conforming to its relief. Each spherical rosette resembling a tightly packed artichoke, is composed of numerous fleshy, tough, pointed leaves without petioles. The climatic conditions induce the appearance of a reddish-purple zone at the end of the leaves. Flowering occurs on rosettes that are 2 or 3 years old, which then disappear, after producing numerous small rosettes near their base or even near the top of their leaves. These small shoots or propagules remain high up for a few weeks, then detach, roll on the ground, and disperse. The 15 cm tall flower stalks develop from June to August, formed by thick stems that bear small pale yellowish-green flowers covered in bristles.
Jovibarba sobolifera 'Green Globe' is a boon for areas in the garden where the soil is thin but not too arid. It is a low-maintenance plant, ideal for an alpine rockery, a wall, or even paving on sandy soil. Houseleeks are easy-to-care-for succulent plants, offering flowers and foliage in various shades that make stunning compositions. Magnificent in their pot arrangements, especially in low pots like 'bonsai terrines', they are irreplaceable in borders, troughs, or rockeries, alongside Saxifraga, wall bellflowers, or Lewisia cotyledon. These endearing perennials quickly inspire the desire to collect them. Remember to choose companions with staggered blooms (Sedums, Thymes, Paronychia) and colourful foliage (Bergenia, Euphorbia myrsinites...) for a variegated and lovely rockery.

Botanical data
Jovibarba sobolifera 'Green Globe' enjoys sunny exposures and perfectly drained, rather poor, sandy or gravelly, non-limestone soils, not too dry in summer, dry in winter. You can plant it in the ground or in a container in spring or autumn, adding non-limestone gravel, pumice or coarse sand to the planting substrate. Conversely, if you place it in a rockery or on a wall, just give it a little potting soil to allow it to establish. Afterwards, occasional watering will be appreciated from March to October if it is very dry. Especially for potted plants.
If you want to multiply it, simply cut a few young rosettes and replant them elsewhere, barely burying the roots. Take care of your beard of Jupiter by ensuring that it is not overwhelmed by taller plants or covered with dead leaves or vegetation residues, and by removing any faded inflorescences if necessary.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
