Description

Hakonechloa macra Naomi forms a luxuriant clump of culms, initially upright and then trailing like overlapping waterfalls, giving a very distinctive effect to the plant. The deciduous leaves of this grass, initially golden-green, gradually take on increasingly darker reddish hues until they become almost entirely purple at the end of the season. The flowers, arranged in small slender spikelets, do not offer any particular appeal.

Magnificent in borders and very fashionable, Hakonechloa macra Naomi can be easily grown in pots and will find a prominent place in a semi-shaded corner of a terrace alongside hostas, ferns or heucheras.

Hakonechloa macra Naomi tolerates all exposures as long as the soil remains moist. However, this grass will have the best effect in the shaded parts of the garden.

Planting and care

Hakonechloa macra Naomi appreciates a moist to wet, but well-drained soil. Tolerant to exposure, it withstands shade and accepts sunlight in cool stony soil. Adding fertiliser in spring stimulates the growth of new foliage. Prune your plant in late February before the emergence of new leaves. For pot cultivation, make sure to water regularly. It is often useful to add a water retainer like STOCKOSORB® to the potting soil.
