Description
The Coreopsis major, now named Anacis major, is a tall North American perennial very different from horticultural coreopsis. Its stiff, upright stems bear deeply divided leaves, arranged at regular intervals in a whorl. In early summer, they branch at their tips and carry large bright yellow daisies, with a yellow or reddish-brown centre. Very hardy, undemanding and drought-resistant, this botanical species suits wildflower meadows and naturalistic borders.
Anacis major belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a herbaceous deciduous perennial: its stems and leaves die back in autumn, while its crown remains alive underground and produces new shoots in spring. This species is native to the eastern United States, from Louisiana and Florida up to Pennsylvania and New York State. It grows in dry, open woodlands, open pine forests, poor grasslands, sandy or stony banks and along roadsides. Long classified within the Coreopsis genus, it was transferred to the Anacis genus in 2024. The plant forms an upright clump. Its stoloniferous crown sends out underground stems that produce new shoots around the base, gradually forming a colony. It reaches 80 to 90 cm in height with a 50 to 60 cm spread, but its stems can approach 1.20 m in richer, moister soil. The colony gradually expands both through its underground stems and by self-sowing. The stems, finely hairy, branch near their tops. The middle leaves are opposite, almost without petioles and divided into three lanceolate leaflets. As two leaves face each other at each node, their six leaflets appear arranged in a whorl around the stem. The upper leaves, smaller, are entire. This regular architecture makes the species recognisable even when not in flower. In June and July, flower heads of 4 to 6 cm in diameter appear. Each usually combines eight bright yellow ray florets, long and slightly toothed, around a central disc of small tubular florets. This centre is yellow on many individuals, but can take on a reddish-brown hue. This flowering provides nectar and pollen for insects, then produces dark brown to black achenes eaten by certain birds. Very hardy, the plant withstands temperatures close to -23 °C. It tolerates heat, atmospheric humidity and drought once established. Overly fertile soil encourages looser stems, and waterlogged ground can cause crown rot.
The tall coreopsis, with its somewhat stiff appearance, is best planted in groups of five to seven specimens in a wildflower meadow, on a bank or in a large sunny border. It can be paired with Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam', lower and lemon-yellow, placed at the front. Echinacea pallida, pale pink, and Symphyotrichum oblongifolium 'October Skies', violet-blue, thrive in the same poor, well-drained soil. Their flowering adds other colours to a natural scene. Allow enough space between neighbouring plants and its crown, which spreads into colonies over the years.

Planting and care
The tickseed 'major' can be planted in March-April or from September to October, outside periods of frost and intense heat. Place it in full sun to obtain sturdy stems and abundant flowering; light partial shade is suitable in warm regions. This perennial prefers poor to ordinary soil, sandy, stony or loamy, dry to moist and very well-drained. It tolerates various pH levels, including slightly chalky soil. In clay soil, plant it on a mound of light, stony earth to keep water away from the collar in winter. Water during the first summer, then only during prolonged droughts. Avoid fertiliser applications, which encourage foliage and less sturdy stems. Division in spring helps contain the stump or rejuvenate a clump that has become too dense.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
