Description
The Lamium maculatum 'Red Nancy', or Spotted Dead Nettle 'Red Nancy', is a perennial groundcover prized for its silvery leaves edged with a fine green margin. Its purple-pink flowers, which bloom above the foliage, are clearly visible in spring. This dead nettle quickly forms a low carpet that fills the ground between taller plants or in border edges. It thrives in partial shade and shade, even in soil that is somewhat dry in summer.
Lamium maculatum belongs to the Lamiaceae family. This perennial species, native to a vast region stretching from Europe to the Caucasus, grows naturally at woodland edges, in hedgerows and in light woodland. Its growth is rapid. The cultivar 'Red Nancy' reaches 15 to 20 cm in height when in flower with a 40 to 60 cm spread. Its creeping stems root where they touch the ground. They bear opposite, toothed, heart-shaped leaves, almost entirely silver, with a very narrow dark green margin. Young stems often take on a reddish tinge. Flowering occurs from April to June; the two-lipped flowers typical of the Lamiaceae are gathered in whorls, i.e. in tiered crowns around short upright stems. Their pink colour, shaded with purple or mauve, contrasts with the pale foliage. A few flowers may reappear during summer or early autumn if the soil does not dry out too much. The foliage is evergreen in winter in temperate regions, but may be partially deciduous under the effect of hard frosts. 'Red Nancy' tolerates chalk and occasional drought once well established. It performs best in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. Its rootstock withstands down to -29°C at its peak.
The Lamium 'Red Nancy' is planted at the base of deciduous shrubs, on a shaded bank or along a lightly sunlit path. Space the young plants 40 to 45 cm apart to gradually achieve an even groundcover. You can pair it with the Heuchera 'Obsidian', with Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' and with Epimedium 'Pink Elf' in moist soil. A double white-flowered oriental hellebore will provide earlier flowering, between February and April. Give each plant enough room and cut back the dead nettle stems that venture into neighbouring clumps.

Planting and care
Plant Lamium maculatum 'Red Nancy' from March to May or from September to November, in partial shade or shade. Loosen the soil and add well-rotted compost if it is poor. In heavy soil, incorporate fine gravel so that water does not stagnate around the roots in winter. Water after planting, then regularly during the first spring and first summer: its tolerance to moderate drought only becomes real after good root establishment. Under established trees, keep a closer eye on young plants, which are subject to competition from roots. Thereafter, water only during prolonged droughts. Remove any bare or damaged parts at the end of winter if necessary. After flowering, light pruning encourages the production of new leaves and helps to limit its spread. Rooted stems can be easily lifted and replanted in spring or autumn.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
