Hello, Out of 10 bulbs, only one has sprouted this year and produced a flower. I am disappointed.

Description

Allium ursinum is a perennial herbaceous bulb, which is characteristic of the allium family by its garlic smell but differentiates itself by a white flowering in small umbels.

Wild garlic has an inflorescence with white-yellowish star-shaped umbels. The floral stem measures 30 to 35cm (12 to 14in). It will bring a touch of colour to your garden from the end of winter. The clumps of wide undulate and veined leaves form large masses. If you crush the leaves slightly, a garlic smell will be released.

Allium ursinum is a woodland plant that appreciates deep and humid soils, in partial shade. It creates exceptional scenes. Its hardiness means it can multiply on its own.

Plant it with Bear's Breeches (Stachys Byzantina 'Big Ears'), pansies, or bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta).

Allium ursinum gets its name from the Celtic language (all: burning, and ursinum: bear). It is appreciated by bears when they come out of hibernation. Wild garlic is a very ancient medicinal plant known to the Celts and the Germans. Its bulb or leaves can be eaten as a condiment. The leaves can be eaten raw in salads.

Planting and care

Alliums are easy-to-grow. Plant them preferably before the end of October so that they have time to establish themselves well. They fear moisture. Offer them a sunny spot in well-drained soils, even rocky ones. Plant larger bulbs at a depth of 10 or 15cm (4 or 6in), spaced 15cm (6in) apart. Plant smaller bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4in), spaced 7cm (3in) apart. They are undemanding, but do prefer poor soils. You won't need to propagate them as the garlic will take care of it itself.
