Description
Tulipa 'Van Eijk' is a variety of Darwin hybrid tulip with vibrant colours. It dates back to 1995, and has proven itself since then. Its corollas with a mystical pink hue symbolise eternal happiness and perfect love. Its large flowers bear light red reflections. They are of exceptional intensity, with a thick substance that gives them excellent vase life and garden performance. Belonging to a new line of early and perennial Darwin hybrids, 'Van Eijk' is a reliable variety with strong stems that are resistant to bad weather. It blooms in the heart of spring. Imperial in flower beds, it is an exceptional flower for bouquets.
Tulipa 'Van Eijk' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, characterised by large single flowers of ovoid shape, appearing in mid-season. They are carried by long stems that are resistant to bad weather. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. 'Van Eijk' will reach 45 to 55cm (18 to 22in) in height when in bloom. The large flowers bloom at the top of strong stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves. These magnificent flowers are pyramidal and elegant, with an almost fluorescent hue, in a mix of dark pink and red. The petals' exterior is washed with mauve in the centre and at the base. The red colour intensifies as the flower matures. The corolla opens, often reaching 12 to 15cm (5 to 6in) in diameter. Flowering takes place in April-May, and each flower lives for several days before fading.
The combination of 'Van Eijk' with tulips in white tones like 'Hakuun' or red tones like 'Big Chief', creates a beautiful harmony. Also mix it with daffodils, jonquils, and hyacinths. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots, and containers. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials. Its cut flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day

Planting and care
Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant. Do not cut the foliage until it is completely yellow and dried.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
