Description

This brand new Oak Leaf Panisse Lettuce produces appetizing, large-sized heads with excellent firmness. Its wide, thick, glossy leaves, with a lime green color, have a subtle hazelnut flavor. It is also a variety resistant to bolting and aphids. Harvest throughout the summer by cutting the leaves above the collar.

Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (with an annual consumption of 4.2 kilograms per person) due to its freshness, crunchiness, and taste. It can be eaten raw in salads but can also be cooked, for example, to accompany peas.

As the ultimate leaf vegetable, Lettuce is an annual plant belonging to the large Asteraceae family. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that flows when it is cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).

It is an essential vegetable in any respectable vegetable garden, and there are so many varieties that it can be cultivated almost all year round.

Lettuce cultivation is easy as long as the cultivation calendar for each variety is respected. Its growth is fast, and it thrives in any soil, as long as it is rich and remains moist.

Harvest: It is simply done with a knife when it reaches ripeness.

Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy its freshness to the fullest, we recommend consuming it immediately after harvesting.

Gardener's tip: During hot summer days, lettuce exposed to direct sunlight tends to wilt. To prevent this from happening, consider protecting them from the intense rays using overturned crates. In our garden, summer lettuces are not grown in rows but instead scattered throughout: at the base of climbing beans, in the middle of cucumbers and squash, whose foliage provides beneficial shade.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outside once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable but it still requires humus-rich soil, otherwise it tends to bolt prematurely. It is advisable to apply a moderate amount of well-rotted compost by raking it in to a depth of 5 cm (2in), preferably in autumn, after loosening the soil as is done for any vegetable crop. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).

During cultivation, remember that lettuce prefers moist soil and remember to water it regularly.

Lettuce is a good companion plant, it can easily be intercropped with other slower-growing vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers... Just avoid planting it next to corn.
