Description

The campanulate Meteora Rambling Bellflower is a perennial dwarf plant with a bushy habit (15 to 30 cm (11.8 in) tall and 30 cm (11.8 in) wide). Ideal for rockeries, borders, pots or containers. Its flowering of bright blue bell-shaped flowers is eye-catching.

The foliage of the Meteora Rambling Bellflower is composed of small, slender leaves with smooth edges, in a light green colour.

From June to August, the slender stems of the Rambling Bellflower are covered with solitary flowers measuring 1 to 3 cm (1.2 in), in a vibrant blue colour veined with white at the centre. The foliage almost disappears under the abundance of flowers. The flowers are bell-shaped with five lobes.

This is an excellent easy-to-grow perennial with rapid growth, flowering from the year of sowing. Sowing can be done directly in the ground, avoiding sometimes difficult transplanting. The Meteora Rambling Bellflower thrives in all good garden soils, provided they are well-drained. It is not afraid of limestone. It prefers a partially shaded exposure but tolerates full sun well.

An ecological asset: Throughout summer, the nectar-rich flowers of the Meteora Rambling Bellflower attract pollinating insects and butterflies to your garden. A good way to improve the ecosystem of your garden and promote fruit and vegetable production in your vegetable patch.

Planting and care

Two options are available to you: early sowing in a seed tray or direct sowing in May.

1°/ Early sowing:
Sow the Campanulate Bellflower from February to May in a seed tray. Use good quality compost. Lightly press down the surface of the compost before sowing. Scatter your seeds. Do not cover the seeds but water them generously with a fine rain. Place your seed tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 15°C to 20°C.

The seeds will germinate in 14 to 21 days. As soon as the plants are manageable, transplant them into 7cm (2.8 in) pots. 15 days before their final placement, start gradually acclimating them to a temperature of 10-12°C.

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good handful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 30 cm (11.8 in) apart.

2°/ Direct sowing in place:
In May, sow the Campanulate Bellflower directly in a well-crumbed soil that you will cover with a good centimeter of sifted compost. Scatter your seeds. Do not cover the seeds but water them generously with a fine rain. Then, ensure regular watering but without excess.

Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain their beauty and promote renewal.
