Brilliant geranium, it grows at a lightning speed. When I received it, it was only 10 cm (4in) tall, but now it's enormous. It smells wonderful and creates quite an impression. I can't wait for next year to order 5 more.

Description

The 'Endsleigh' Scented Pelargonium forms a small spreading bush, with silky stems carrying pretty evergreen leaves that are rounded and plicate, with undulate margins and marked with a central brownish-purple spot. They release a surprising fragrance reminiscent of black pepper when lightly touched. The plant produces small lavender to mauve flowers throughout the summer. This variety is well suited for hanging baskets and is particularly resistant to drought and salty air. It should be grown in full sun, either indoors or on the terrace, in well-drained soil. It can only be grown in the ground in our mildest regions that are not affected by frost.

The 'Endsleigh' Scented Pelargonium, whose parentage is controversial, is derived from several botanical species native to the Cape Province in South Africa, including Pelargonium capitatum and Pelargonium quercifolium. The plant forms a perennial bush with a spreading habit, sometimes even slightly trailing. This variety reaches a height of 60 to 70 cm (24 to 28in) with a spread of 80 cm (32in). Its highly ornamental foliage consists of cordate-based, lightly lobed, strongly undulate, pubescent leaves that are 4 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) wide. The leaves start off green with dark purple-brown blotches at the centre, gradually becoming a uniform dark green in summer. The flowering period is from June to September, with small umbels of delicate lavender to pale pink flowers, which may be less spectacular than those of classic perennial or annual hybrids but are more authentic. The two upper petals, veined with garnet, give them a bicoloured appearance.

The 'Endsleigh' Pelargonium releases a powerful fragrance when touched and repels mosquitoes. So, plant it in a pot or in the ground in a spot where you can touch it, along a path or in a pot on the terrace or veranda. Scented geraniums are precious for perfuming a room, where they delight us with their sometimes unexpected and wonderful scents. One day after the rain, we stopped in front of a bed of scented geraniums and spent a long time immersing ourselves in a symphony of delicate perfumes. In mild climates, this plant is perfectly resistant to summer drought and salty winds and requires very little maintenance, making it valuable for dry gardens by the sea.

Try adding the flowers of the scented pelargonium to a recipe, it works! The edible leaves are used in fruit salads and potpourri.

Planting and care

Plant your scented geraniums in the ground after the last frost, in a very sunny location to enhance the foliage colours and promote flowering. You can also plant them in pots placed in a protected location, which you will take out in May. If you install them in the ground, wait until the frost has passed. Scented geraniums require well-drained soil, but not necessarily very rich. Water moderately. In pots, regular watering is necessary in summer. You can keep your geraniums by bringing them inside a veranda or a cold greenhouse in winter. They can tolerate a light frost (-3/-4°C (26.6/24.8°F)), but won't survive the winter in the garden, except by the seaside.
