Description

The Calathea roseopicta, nicknamed Rose Painted Calathea, is a star among houseplants due to its spectacular leaves adorned with pink and green patterns that catch everyone's eye. Dense and graphic, it fits perfectly into boho, tropical, or even Scandinavian-style decors. This plant loves indirect light and humid environments reminiscent of its tropical habitat. To ensure successful growth, water it with non-calcareous water and keep it away from cold draughts.

A member of the Marantaceae family, the Calathea roseopicta has now been reclassified into the Goeppertia genus and renamed Goeppertia roseopicta. It is also known by the botanical synonyms Maranta roseopicta and Phyllodes roseopicta. This is a bushy perennial reaching around 50 cm in height and spread at maturity depending on growing conditions. Its foliage, a true work of art, consists of large ovate leaves with purple undersides and tops marked by bright pink veins. Although it may occasionally produce small white flowers indoors, it is its leaves that are truly remarkable.

Native to the tropical forests of South America, this plant thrives in humid undergrowth sheltered from direct sunlight. It prefers high humidity and temperatures between 18 and 24 °C. The Calathea roseopicta is not hardy and cannot tolerate temperatures below 10 °C, but it is non-toxic, making it a safe choice for homes with pets or children. This plant is also known for its air-purifying properties, which improve indoor air quality.

The Calathea roseopicta makes a striking addition to a bright conservatory or a minimalist living room. For a refined look, place it in a white or gold ceramic pot and pair it with plants like the Philodendron Brasil or the Maranta leuconeura, which share its light and humidity requirements. It will shine on a shelf surrounded by wicker baskets or in an urban jungle setting with plants featuring contrasting foliage. Stunning in both sophisticated and casual decors, it will bring a chic and natural ambiance to any interior.

Location

The calathea can find its place in any moderately lit room in the house, away from direct sunlight. However, avoid placing it in a draught or a room that is too dry, as this could damage its leaves. A tropical conservatory with a warm and humid atmosphere would also meet all its needs.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 years, in spring, when the roots fill the pot.
