Ficus Alii - Narrow-leaf fig

The Ficus binnendijkii 'Alii' (Ficus maclellandii 'Alii'), also known as the sabre-leaf fig or Ficus sabre, is a popular indoor plant prized for its slender silhouette and textured foliage. The Ficus 'Alii' is a cultivar of Ficus maclellandii, a species native to the lowland jungles of Southeast Asia, particularly India. It belongs to the Moraceae family. Indoors, it can reach around 1.5m in height with a spread of 1m, depending on growing conditions. This shrubby plant has an upright habit, with a single trunk topped by a rounded, trailing crown. Its leaves, measuring between 8 and 15cm long and 2.5cm wide, are leathery, trailing, and glossy green. Flowering is very rare indoors, and when its flowers do appear, they are discreet and insignificant. Like many ficus plants, 'Alii' produces a milky sap that can irritate mucous membranes; it is therefore advisable to keep it away from pets and young children. The Ficus 'Alii' helps purify the air by absorbing substances such as formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and toluene.

In its natural habitat, Ficus maclellandii grows in warm, humid environments, which explains its preference for bright light without direct sun exposure and moderate watering indoors. This cold-sensitive plant can be placed outdoors in summer, provided it is protected from sunlight, drafts, and temperatures below 15°C.
