Description

The Ficus benjamina 'Exotica', also known as Weeping Fig or Houseplant Ficus, is an elegant indoor plant with glossy foliage and gracefully trailing branches, perfect for adding character to your home. Its naturally trailing habit makes this variety a centrepiece in a living room or conservatory with a zen and tropical atmosphere. Suited to Scandinavian, contemporary, or jungle-inspired décor styles, it fits seamlessly into modern or natural settings. To ensure its longevity, place your ficus in a bright spot away from direct sunlight and keep its potting soil slightly moist.

The Ficus benjamina 'Exotica' belongs to the Moraceae family. It is a highly popular cultivar widely grown for its unique aesthetics. This shrub-like plant can reach 2 to 3 metres in height indoors with a spread of 1 to 2 metres depending on growing conditions and pot size. Its habit is trailing, and its deep green, lustrous leaves measure between 5 and 10 cm. Its dense foliage gives the entire plant a refined appearance.

Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, the Ficus benjamina thrives naturally in warm, humid environments. Indoors, it requires indirect light, a stable temperature between 18 and 24°C, and well-draining compost.

Warning - Be aware that this plant is toxic to pets if ingested.

As a bonus, it is known for its air-purifying properties, effectively filtering toxins such as formaldehyde and xylene, making it an ally for cleaner air.

The Ficus benjamina 'Exotica' blends beautifully into minimalist, traditional, or bohemian décors where its graceful lines can shine. Placed in a white ceramic floor pot in a bright living room, it adds a contemporary and airy touch. In a rustic or vintage setting, dress it with a wicker or terracotta planter. It is perfect for framing a reading nook or enhancing an entrance. In a conservatory, its dense foliage creates a tropical effect, especially when paired with plants like the Monstera deliciosa or Philodendron 'Brasil'.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately in summer, ensuring the compost dries out slightly between waterings. In winter, reduce watering and opt for a light soaking of the root ball if needed. Mist the foliage regularly to maintain adequate ambient humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring.
Mix houseplant compost with clay pebbles to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid NPK 10-10-10 fertiliser for green plants every two weeks during spring and summer.

Houseplant care

Turn the pot regularly to ensure the light is evenly distributed across all the foliage. Wipe the leaves to remove dust and enhance their shine. This plant may shed a few leaves if it experiences sudden changes in environment or watering.
Prune lightly in late winter to maintain a harmonious shape, and remove any dead branches.
