Description

The Ficus elastica 'Melany' is a compact variety of Rubber Plant that will delight interior design enthusiasts with limited space. With its lustrous deep green foliage and bold habit, this variety fits perfectly into contemporary, minimalist, or even industrial styles. It easily finds its place on a shelf or in a corner of the living room or office. Provide this easy-care plant with gentle light and moderate watering, avoiding excess to prevent stressing its roots.

The Rubber Plant 'Melany' belongs to the Moraceae family. This horticultural variety is a mutation of Ficus 'Decora', initially cultivated in the orangeries of the Netherlands and Southern Holland in the 1980s. It was selected for its bushy and compact habit. When mature, the plant reaches a height of 90 cm with a spread of around 50 cm. Its thick, ovate, and glossy leaves measure 10 to 15 cm long, featuring a leathery texture and a dark green hue accentuated by a slightly lighter central vein. Flowering, rare indoors, appears as small spherical structures called "synconia," typical of Ficus, but of purely botanical interest.

Native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, the botanical species Ficus elastica grows naturally in humid forests where it can reach imposing dimensions. Indoors, it prefers a temperate atmosphere (18-25°C), not too dry, along with gentle light. The Ficus genus is renowned for its air-purifying qualities, helping to cleanse the air by absorbing certain volatile compounds. However, be cautious: the sap is mildly toxic if ingested or in contact with the skin, requiring vigilance around children and pets.

The Ficus 'Melany' is a versatile plant for interior decoration. In a Scandinavian-style living room, pair it with white ceramic or textured stoneware pots to highlight its clean aesthetic. In a tropical setting, showcase it with a wicker or rattan planter. You can also place it on a shelf, in a contemporary office, or on the floor near a glass wall for an urban jungle vibe. Elegant, sophisticated, and space-saving, the Ficus 'Melany' adapts equally well to relaxed or refined environments, always exuding timeless natural charm.
