Description

Guzmania 'Calypso' is a tropical bromeliad that will make a striking addition to your indoor space. Its bright red bracts with orange hues, combined with its dense and glossy foliage, bring an exotic and colourful touch to any room. This versatile variety fits perfectly into contemporary, bohemian, or tropical décors, creating a warm and refined atmosphere.

Guzmania 'Calypso' is a cultivar from the Bromeliaceae family, selected for its beauty and adaptability to modern interiors. This cultivar is the result of cross-breeding between different Guzmania species, notably Guzmania lingulata and Guzmania monostachia, native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. These epiphytic species, which naturally grow on trees in humid forests, have passed on to this cultivar a preference for a humid environment. Guzmania 'Calypso' captivates with its bright red floral bracts that emerge from the centre of an elegant rosette of green, glossy leaves. These bracts, often mistaken for flowers, are actually modified leaves surrounding the true flowers, which are small and short-lived, typically appearing in spring or summer depending on growing conditions. Easy to care for, the plant reaches a height of 45 to 50 cm with a spread of 40 cm at maturity. Ensure it is placed in a spot with bright but indirect light and maintain a high ambient humidity to replicate its natural habitat. It prefers moderate temperatures between 18 and 27°C.

Guzmania 'Calypso' adapts perfectly to contemporary, minimalist, or exotic interiors. To showcase it, pair it with plants featuring lush foliage of a very different appearance, such as dracaenas or Philodendron 'Brasil', which share similar light and humidity requirements.

Location

Avoid exposing the Guzmania Calypso to direct sunlight to prevent leaf burns. Keep it away from draughts and direct heat sources such as radiators. Excessively dry air can harm the young plant; maintain ambient humidity by regularly misting the foliage or using a humidifier. With its compact size and attractive spreading habit, it is perfect for enhancing a modern or exotic interior. Placed on a coffee table, shelf, or in a bright corner, it adds an elegant tropical touch. This plant pairs particularly well with natural materials like light wood, rattan, or bamboo, but also works in a minimalist décor to introduce a splash of colour.

Maintenance and care

Water by pouring non-calcareous water into the central rosette and keep the substrate slightly moist. Water into the rosette once a week in summer. Reduce watering in winter and avoid stagnant water.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years or when the plant becomes too large for its pot, but it enjoys being slightly pot-bound.
Use a mix of orchid compost and turf, with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser for houseplants once a month during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No pruning is necessary; remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain the aesthetic of the plant.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Excess water leads to root rot.
