Description

The Philodendron 'Painted Lady' is a tropical treasure to welcome into your home! With its bright, finely marbled yellow and green foliage, this climbing plant will transform your interior into a little slice of exotic jungle. Pinkish stems add a touch of sophistication to its lush vegetation. Provide it with a sturdy support and gentle light, and watch it climb gracefully. Be sure to maintain good ambient humidity and mist its leaves regularly.

The Philodendron 'Painted Lady' is a hybrid cultivar of Philodendron erubescens, belonging to the Araceae family. This cultivar was developed in Florida in the 1970s by horticulturist Robert McColley. It is a climbing perennial with moderate growth capable of reaching a height of 1.50 m with a spread of around 60 cm. Its leaves of an initially vibrant yellow speckled with green turn greener as they mature; they measure between 15 and 20 cm in length. The stems and petioles display a pinkish to reddish hue. Although the Philodendron 'Painted Lady' may produce inflorescences formed of a green spathe and white spadix; indoor flowering is however rare.

Warning - All parts of the Philodendron 'Painted Lady' are toxic if ingested, so be sure to keep it out of reach of children and pets.

The Philodendron 'Painted Lady' will thrive in any indoor space provided that its location is chosen carefully. Pair it with other Philodendrons or variegated Calatheas to enhance the colour scheme.

Location

The Philodendron Painted Lady will thrive in a well-lit and fairly humid living room, office, conservatory, or bathroom. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch, as well as cold draughts. Place it in a bright living room, a modern office, or even a tropical conservatory. Opt for a textured ceramic planter to enhance its chic appeal, or choose a decorative natural wood stake to highlight its wild side. Perfect for urban jungle, boho-chic, or even minimalist styles, it quickly becomes the centrepiece of your décor.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry to a depth of 2-3 cm. Never allow water to stagnate in the saucer. Mist regularly.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 1 to 2 years, preferably in spring, when the roots fill the pot.
Use an airy mix: houseplant compost with perlite and pine bark. Add clay pebbles to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for green plants (NPK 10-10-10), to be applied every fortnight in spring and summer. Reduce to once a month in autumn and stop in winter.

Houseplant care

The young plant occasionally sheds its oldest leaves, which is natural. Wipe its leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust. This also helps prevent parasitic infestations.
With minimal care, this variety grows well and offers a lovely plant presence. Prune overly long shoots in spring to encourage denser growth. Remove yellowed or damaged leaves to maintain its aesthetic appeal.

Disease and pest advice

Good ventilation and moderate watering significantly reduce the risks. In case of scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and apply an appropriate organic treatment.
