Description

The Syngonium 'Neon Robusta' nicknamed 'Goosefoot' is a compact variety with a climbing habit when supported or it can trail down from a pot. It develops arrow-shaped leaves with foliage ranging from pale pink to vivid magenta. To maintain the vibrancy of its colours, place this Syngonium in a bright spot without direct sunlight and ensure that ambient humidity remains above 60%.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Syngonium 'Neon Robusta' is a horticultural cultivar derived from the Syngonium podophyllum species. The Syngonium genus includes around 36 species native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, particularly from Mexico to Brazil. In their natural habitat, these plants climb up trees, thriving in high humidity and dappled light beneath the canopy. This variety also known simply as 'Neon' has a trailing liana habit, meaning that indoors, you can let its stems trail from a pot or provide a support for it to climb up. Compact in size, it typically reaches between 30 and 60 cm in height and spread at maturity. Its leaves feature a slightly crinkled texture and a highly variable pink hue ranging from soft pink to deep magenta, depending on lighting conditions and care, often with some residual green. This cultivar rarely flowers indoors.
As a houseplant, the Neon thrives in bright, indirect light, high ambient humidity, and a well-draining substrate to best replicate its natural environment. It can also grow in lower light conditions though its growth will slow and its foliage will appear paler.

The Syngonium 'Neon' is a versatile plant that suits various interior design styles. In a contemporary or minimalist setting, its compact habit and elegant leaves make a striking statement. If you're a plant collector, pair it with plants like the Philodendron 'Brasil' and Pothos 'Marble Queen' which share similar light and humidity requirements.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface. In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Mist the foliage regularly to maintain high ambient humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring every 1 to 2 years or when the roots start to outgrow the pot.
Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter, ideally mixed with clay pebbles or perlite to promote aeration and prevent waterlogging.
A balanced liquid fertiliser for houseplants is recommended, applied every 2 to 3 weeks during the growth period (spring and summer). Reduce the frequency in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

Undemanding, this plant simply requires removing the yellowed leaves and wiping dusty leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their shine.
Prune the stems regularly to encourage branching and maintain a compact or climbing shape according to your preference.

Disease and pest advice

In case of scale insects, use a cotton pad soaked in alcohol to remove them, then spray a soapy water solution to prevent further infestation.
