Hardy cacti and cold-resistant succulent plants can be planted in open ground in many regions. Depending on the variety, they can withstand –10 to –20 °C, or even lower. Their hardiness will be improved in full sun and in very well-drained soil. These drought-resistant plants can be planted in a rockery, on a bank, or in a gravel bed.
Among the most robust are Opuntia scheeri, which forms a large bush of prickly pear pads bristling with fine yellow prickles and withstands temperatures down to –18 °C. Agave montana spreads a wide rosette of green leaves armed with coppery thorns. Aloe striatula (–12 °C) becomes a shrub with long fleshy leaves and orange-yellow spikes over time. Much lower, Orostachys boehmeri multiplies its small grey-green rosettes at ground level.
