Description

Iris ‘Pastell Ballett’ is a Lilliput garden iris with pastel tones, between very pale butter yellow, blue lavender and white. This small iris is suitable near a path, in a rock garden or at the edge of a low wall. Its lightly fragrant spring flowering accompanies that of small white or blue bulbs and grey foliage.

'Pastell Ballett' belongs to the Lilliput irises, these small irises called standard dwarf bearded irises. This category includes low-growing irises, between miniature and intermediate irises, which flower before the main season of garden irises. This variety 'Pastell Ballett' reaches 25 to 27 cm in height when in flower. The plant forms a small clump of glaucous green, narrow, upright leaves arising from a fleshy rootstock that is near the surface. The stump gradually expands. Each flower is formed of three upright petals and three trailing sepals. In 'Pastell Ballett', the petals are very pale yellow, the style arms in the centre echo this soft yellow, with a fine light blue edge. The trailing sepals are pale blue to light lavender, traversed by slightly stronger veins and edged in pale yellow. The beards are white on the visible part and pale yellow in the throat. This flowering emits a light sweet fragrance.

'Pastell Ballett' is a German introduction by Frank Kathe, registered in 2006 under seedling number 339-1. It originates from the cross-breeding 'Frohnatur' × 'Dérive'.

Around 'Pastell Ballett', between the stones of a rock garden or in a raised border, you can plant a few Iris germanica ‘Katy Petts’, some bulbs of Scilla siberica and Anemone blanda ‘White Splendour’ and a few clumps of Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue.

Planting and care

The Iris 'Pastell Ballet' is planted from July to October as a rootstock, or in spring and autumn for potted young plants, outside freezing periods. Install it in full sun, in soil loosened to a depth of 20 cm, with gravel if the soil retains water in winter. Place the rootstock almost on the surface, roots spread in the soil; its top must remain visible. Water well at planting, then only during dry periods for the first few weeks. A light application of mature compost around the clump is sufficient in poor soil. Divide the clumps every three or four years, in summer, when flowering decreases at the centre of the stump.
