Description

Sedum palmeri is a small, creeping succulent plant that is ideal for covering a rockery or trailing and filling a pot or hanging basket. Its small succulent leaves are arranged in a rosette at the end of the stems. They start green and turn red, contrasting with the yellow flowers in late winter. It is a perennial plant, suited to dry soils and hot, sunny locations, which requires very little maintenance.

From the family of Crassulaceae, the Sedum (also known as hylotelephium) palmeri, also known as S. compressum, is a small perennial plant native to the mountains of Mexico. This Palmer's Sedum does not exceed 20 cm in height and has a spread of 30 to 40 cm. Its stems are creeping or trailing, depending on the position. They easily root when they touch the ground. Its small fleshy, ovoid leaves are arranged in a rosette at the end of the stems. They measure 3 to 5 cm long. They are a beautiful pistachio green colour and often turn reddish in winter due to the cold or in summer due to heat and drought. From February to April, small, star-shaped, nectar-rich,  yellow flowers appear, grouped in corymbs.

This Palmer's Sedum loves the sun and heat and dislikes moisture in winter. It is hardy down to -9°C in dry soil. In colder regions, grow it in a pot. It can be creeping or trailing if planted in a hanging basket or pot. It can thrive with little soil in a dry, sunny rockery. Create a colourful mosaic by combining Palmer's Sedum with other small sedums that bloom in spring like Sedum spathulifolium ‘Cape Blanco’ or in summer with Sedum takesimensis ‘Atlantis’, houseleeks or Delosperma with brightly coloured flowers.

Planting and care

Plant the Palmer's Sedum in light, even dry, soil that is well-drained. Its shallow roots dislike moisture in winter. A mixture of compost, sand, and garden soil will work well in a pot or between the stones of a rockery. In a pot, provide a layer of gravel or clay balls for drainage. Ideally, place it in full sun to enhance the colouration of its foliage and enhance its flowering, or in partial shade. This plant is quite hardy (-9°C). In colder regions, it is best to plant it in a pot and bring it indoors during winter. Once well-rooted, it only needs rainwater. However, a few waterings during severe drought can improve its appearance. If it doesn't receive rainwater, water it every 15 days. Palmer's sedums are very easy to propagate. In spring, cut a stem or a leaf and let it dry for a few days in a dry and shady place, then place it in a tray of moist sand.
