Description

The 'Pays Bas' Triumph Tulip, simple, very white but impressive, honors its Dutch origins. The opulence of its cup, its excellent vase life and its very bright dress make it a flower that is certainly perfect in all circumstances, but also very easy to complement in the garden. This mid-season variety also has long, sturdy stems that withstand inclement weather. Perfect for bringing light to somewhat sad borders, ideal in a white garden, it is one of the best in the category of white triumph tulips.

The 'Pays Bas' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, obtained in 1996 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group. Perched on sturdy stems, 50 cm (20in) tall, well above the widely lanceolate leaves, the thick-textured flowers are mostly white with a discreet yellow spot at the base of the petals. They sometimes also show a few very light pale yellow flames. Rounded in shape, with a large cup size, they take a while to open before wilting. They are carried by thin but very strong stems, unaffected by inclement weather. Flowering generally takes place in May, in the heart of the tulip season.

The 'Pays Bas' Triumph Tulip finds its place, in small groups, in borders of perennials of all colours and naturally in a white garden. Its simplicity allows for multiple associations with lilies, old roses, German irises, peonies, all of these flowers recreating a sumptuous living tableau, evoking still lives painted during the "tulipomania" era. This tulip, fairly late flowering, also allows for maximizing the duration of flowering in borders. It can be planted in flower beds, rockeries as well as in pots and containers to beautify balconies and terraces. Ideal for creating elegant bouquets in vases, only add very little water. Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

About botanical species: tulip species are found from Western Europe to China and Japan, passing through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity of the genus is located in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan. Various wild species can be found in Europe, most of which are endangered.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Pays Bas' tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is best to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
