Description

The Dentate Tulip 'Alexandra' offers a flowering of a rich orange with bronze reflections bordered with yellow, very bright in April-May. Its flowers, with their graceful shape, resemble those of the lily-flowered tulips, like the famous 'Ballerina', but their slightly recurved petals show fringed edges of a bright yellow. They are carried by sturdy and strong stems that withstand the wind. Perfect in bouquets or in spring flowerbeds.

The Dentate Tulip 'Alexandra' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely dentate petal tips. This tulip will reach a height of 40 to 45cm (16 to 18in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place in April-May, at the heart of the tulip season. The flowers are single, in a mix of bright orange and burnt orange, in an elongated and slightly open cup shape, and measure up to 5cm (2in) wide. The fringed edges of this tulip are golden yellow. The flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

In the world of flowers, there is truly nothing comparable to dentate tulips to spice up your spring garden with something unique. Ideal for borders, the 'Alexandra' Tulip will also create beautiful spots in perennial flowerbeds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose forget-me-nots or wallflowers for this purpose. By choosing dentate tulips, you will bring an original touch to your bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Alexandra' tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Place it in a good, sunny or semi-shady location. Once flowering is complete, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
