Description

The Asian Lily 'Treasure' stands out for its bright orange, almost flamboyant, fully open flowers with slightly outward-curved petals. Its sturdy stems bear about a dozen floral buds that bloom early in the summer. Easy to grow, reliable, and flowering faithfully each year, this lily only lacks fragrance. It's a variety that will brighten up borders, terraces, and floral compositions.

The genus Lilium belongs to the lily family, its members are bulbous plants whose deciduous vegetation emerges in spring. In full season, the lily has a narrow and very vertical habit. 'Treasure' is a horticultural hybrid obtained by cross-breeding various species from Central and Western Asia. This plant will reach 1 m to 1.20 m in height when flowering, and the clump will spread indefinitely over time, with bulbs producing bulblets through vegetative multiplication. Flowering occurs in June. Along the stems, numerous flowers appear measuring up to 12 cm in diameter. Their centre displays a vivid reddish-orange tone, enhanced by intense orange veins that give them depth and immediately catch the eye. The outer petals, a bright yellowish-orange, create a nice contrast with the flower's centre. Some discreet small spots and papillae are visible, the nectaries are orange, and the pollen is brown. The stigma is purple. The slightly ruffled and curved petals at the tips give an elegant and sophisticated look to each flower. The stems are very strong, covered with alternate, narrow, shiny mid-green leaves.

To create a harmonious scene, combine the Lilium 'Treasure' with lilies like 'Tebaldi' in bright orange or 'New Red Asiatic Seedling' for its deep red colour, and add a white lily such as 'Casablanca' for an elegant contrast. Pair it with daylilies like 'Crimson Pirate' with warm tones, and blue or purple flowering perennials like Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna'. Incorporating grasses like Stipa tenuifolia and perennials such as Alchemilla mollis around the lily is beneficial for shading the soil and stabilising the stems against wind and rain.

Planting and care

The 'Tresor' lily appreciates humus-bearing, slightly calcareous, well-drained, and light soils. You will plant it in full sun, preferably in spring, burying the bulbs 15 cm deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a pocket of sand to prevent rot and slug attacks while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as vegetation only starts in April. When the stems reach 30 cm high, discreetly stake them.

If red insects appear, treat them promptly; they are lily beetles whose larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually, but beware, they drop as soon as touched, so place a box underneath. After flowering, it is useful to cut off the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed beautiful throughout the summer.

Tip for planting lilies in compact soil: The scaly bulbs of tall lilies are sensitive to clayey soils that suffocate them and cause rot. In Eastern Europe, the following technique is used to help these bulbs survive the winter. Plant them on 'benches' built above ground level. These benches consist of a first layer of gravel, on which tightly packed branches are placed. Cover everything with a thick layer of compost, 20 to 30 cm deep. Plant the bulbs in the compost, where a few ground-covering plants can also be added.

On the terrace, you can create sumptuous pots with lilies. Choose a container that is wide and deep enough (at least 16 cm in diameter for 1 bulb). Fill it with a mix of garden soil, leaf compost, and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs, 10-15 cm apart, then water generously. Place the pots in a cool room or outside once the frost has passed. The ambient temperature should be around 12°C. When shoots appear, move the pot to a bright conservatory or room at around 18°C. Apply liquid fertilizer twice a month until the flower buds appear.
