Description

This Vegetable Patch mix combines no less than 32 species of low-growing perennial or annual plants intended to feed and promote the presence of beneficial insects that will protect the vegetable garden. These beneficial insects are valuable for regulating aphids and other pests that harm cropsThe seeds are sown in spring or late summer, directly in place, in a sunny, freshly weeded, worked, and loosened soil. The bed thus created will flower for several years and will also provide a refuge for biodiversity. Some plants will self-seed wherever they please.

In this mix you will find plants such as viper's bugloss, centaury, elegant layia Layia platyglossa, borage Borago officinalis, yarrow Achillea millefolium, and wild carrot Daucus carota. They attract beneficial insects with their flowering rich in pollen and nectar. All these plants show rather rapid growth and easily naturalise in the garden, in ordinary and well-drained soil. A packet of seeds can cover approximately 3 square metres. The size of the plants ranges from 30cm (12in) to 60cm (24in) tall.

It has become very popular to plant a flowering meadow. They combine usefulness with beauty and flower throughout the entire summer season, requiring very little maintenance. Watering if the weather is extremely dry and cutting to 10 cm (4in) in autumn will be more than enough. Invite nature into your garden: sow our flower mixes alongside pathways, near the vegetable garden, on a slope by a sunken path, near your fruit trees, or in the back of a garden bordering the countryside.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow directly in place from March to early June, once the soil has warmed up, or in September-October, in well-prepared soil, free of weeds and raked. Sow thinly on the surface of the soil, broadcast, then lightly rake to cover the seeds. Roll or tamp the soil with the back of a spade. Water and keep moist until germination. Alternatively, sow at a depth of 1.5 mm (0in) in furrows spaced 30 cm (12in) apart. Germination usually takes 14 to 30 days.

Cultivation:
When the young plants appear, water well and remove weeds. In autumn, at the end of flowering, seeds can be collected and sown elsewhere. Water well to make the seeds adhere to the soil. Prune or mow to a height of 10-20 cm (4-8in) at the end of flowering.

Once the plants are well established, water your bed only in case of prolonged drought.
