Description

The 'Winter Banana' Apple Tree  is a very vigorous variety, very fertile and with rapid fruiting. It produces flattened spherical fruits, sulphur yellow, pink in the sun, irregular in shape. Their creamy yellow flesh is firm, sweet, tender, and fine. It has a slight taste of banana. Harvest takes place in October. The fruits can be stored in a cool place until February. The 'Winter Banana' Apple Tree is not self-fertile, it is fairly resistant to diseases, and it is a very good pollinator.

The apple tree is a native tree in Europe, especially in France where its presence has been documented since ancient times. The 'Winter Banana' Apple Tree is a variety selected in the USA, at Flory Farm, in Indiana, in 1876.

The spreading habit gives the tree a tall trunk, then a spread-out appearance, naturally ventilating it and providing some resistance to diseases. It has regular and homogeneous productivity. In case of high productivity, thinning is necessary to avoid small-sized fruits and the occurrence of diseases.
Its foliage is composed of very large, ovate, slightly fuzzy leaves, dark green on the upper side, whitish green on the lower side, deeply toothed.
The white flowering, mid-early, occurs at the end of March. The flowering is not afraid of frost. The apple tree is therefore adapted to cultivation in all regions. Self-sterile, the presence of apple trees whose flowering occurs at the same time is necessary. The varieties 'Calville Blanche Hiver', 'Idared', and 'Golden Delicious' are the most suitable.
Fruiting begins in October. The fruits can be stored in a cool place (cellar or refrigerator) until February. They are flattened spherical fruits, sulphur yellow, pink in the sun, irregular in shape. Their creamy yellow flesh is firm, sweet, tender, and fine. It has a slight taste of banana.

These apples are particularly good for eating. They can of course be used in pastries, jams, jellies, or in savoury dishes, in combination with Norman cheeses for example.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny location for your 'Winter Banana' Apple tree, the soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but not excessively so. Dig a wide planting hole at least 3 times the size of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (compost, potting soil...) and a base fertilizer such as crushed horn. Do not bury the graft collar. Stake if necessary. Water abundantly, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside of the freezing period. Container-grown plants can be planted all year round, except during periods of extreme heat or frost.

You can add a small scoop of wood ash, rich in potash, during the winter to improve fruiting. Watch out for possible aphid attacks during the season. A white powdery mildew caused by a fungus can appear on the leaves in summer, but it does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only store picked fruits. Store apples with the stem downwards, on racks or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry, cool location, but frost-free.

Care

Pruning instructions The size of your apple tree can be limited to a simple pruning of dead or obstructing branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, giving the tree a goblet shape, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In any case, make sure to leave some spaces in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light. Don't hesitate to thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps achieve a better size.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to March, November
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
