Description

Kalanchoe beharensis 'Silver Shadow' is a remarkable succulent, known for its shrubby habit and striking foliage, covered in a silvery down that gives it a velvety appearance. This cultivar, derived from Kalanchoe beharensis, stands out for its lighter, silvery leaves with wavy edges. This drought-resistant plant is easy to grow indoors, where it adds an exotic and elegant touch. With its sculptural form and unique texture, it immediately catches the eye and makes a stunning centrepiece in any succulent collection.

Kalanchoe beharensis 'Silver Shadow' belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is native to the dry, rocky regions of Madagascar. It develops a shrubby habit, reaching around 80 cm to 1 metre in height indoors, with slow but steady growth. Its thick, triangular leaves, in a silvery-grey hue, are covered in a fine protective down that reduces evaporation and enhances its drought resistance. Their slightly wavy edges and soft texture make this plant highly decorative. Its velvety foliage, coated in a protective bloom, gives it a soft touch and beautiful texture. The leaves, usually clustered at the ends of the branches, are opposite, petiolate, and fleshy, with a triangular to hastate or spear-shaped, sometimes almost peltate, featuring irregularly lobed and wavy edges. Their colour ranges from olive green to dark green, while their surface may be smooth and powdery or covered in a dense felt of glandular hairs. With age, the foliage develops a rusty hue on top and a silvery underside. Flowering is rare indoors, presenting as small tubular yellow-orange flowers in clusters, but its main appeal lies in its imposing, textured foliage.

Kalanchoe beharensis 'Silver Shadow' thrives in bright light, with several hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its compact habit and silvery hues. It tolerates temperatures between 15 and 30°C but should be kept above 10°C in winter. This robust plant is rarely affected by diseases.

With its large silvery leavesKalanchoe beharensis 'Silver Shadow' makes a striking sculptural plant, ideal for a living room, conservatory, or bright office. Grown in a terracotta pot, it benefits from good drainage, and its velvety texture is showcased beautifully. It pairs well with other compact succulents, such as Echeverias or Crassula ovata, or with slender plants like Aloes. Its silvery foliage contrasts magnificently with darker-leaved plants.

Use a succulent compost mix with well-draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7) once a month during the growth period.
