Description

The flower of the 'Cool' Late Double Tulip evokes a white peony revealing a golden heart. This recent creation displays a distinctly double, pom-pom-like corolla with diaphanous petals, whose delicate appearance is belied by excellent vase life as well as in the garden. It blooms quite late, in May, on short and sturdy stems. It will be perfect in a white garden, a romantic border, or even, why not, in a bridal bouquet.

The 'Cool' Late Double Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 2013 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', whose main characteristic is to present very double and creased, peony-shaped flowers carried by weather-resistant stems. the 'Cool' creation is of modest size (35-40 cm) but its blooms are majestic, with a diameter of 8 cm, double and well arranged, reminiscent of a fully bloomed peony. The flowering takes place at the end of the tulip season. The flowers last a long time in the garden as well as in a vase, allowing to extend the tulip season until May. To enhance the somewhat cold elegance of this variety, under the sun spreads a generous foliage, comprising wide lanceolate leaves of a slightly bluish green.

The 'Cool' Late Double Tulip fis at home in large borders, in the company of perennial plants and tulips with varied colours that it enhances, but also in a white garden. This tulip beautifully decorates balconies and terraces. It is ideal for creating elegant cut flower displays, accompanied for example by the 'Astarte Design' (raspberry red edged with white), 'Carnival of Nice', white Lunaria, and red lily varieties. In a vase, use very little water, just a low level is enough! Moreover, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes in the vase each day. When planting this unmatched combination for bringing out spring colours in pots or sunny garden exposures, remember to consider the plants' mature height and flowering period when designing your borders, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care

Preferably place the 'Cool' late double tulip in a sunny location from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also place it in a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in light, fertile, and well-drained soil, deeply loosened to a depth of 15 cm (bulbs should be covered with soil to a depth twice their height). Space the bulbs 10 cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other, for a mass effect. Cut the flowering stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
