With its dark shades of purple, violet, and black, this fringed tulip pays a beautiful tribute to the famous painter who, despite his torments, loved the power of colours so much. It blooms quite late, in April-May, towards the end of the tulip season, on a sturdy stem that reaches a height of 40 to 45cm (16 to 18in).

Description

Tulipa 'Vincent van Gogh' is a fringed tulip bearing elegant flowers in dark colours. Their tone varies from dark purple to almost black, depending on the time and day. It blooms in the second part of spring, towards the end of the tulip season. Its flowers are carried by a sturdy stem. They are perfect in a vase, in the garden, or in flower pots. It enhances all neighbouring plants and pairs well with an infinite range of pastel or bolder colours, from white to pink and red, passing through all shades of blue.

Tulipa 'Vincent van Gogh' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was registered in 2011. It is classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is finely dentate petals. This tulip will reach approximately 45cm (18in) in height when flowering. Flowering takes place in April-May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are single, with a slightly open cup, in a beautiful palette of rich and dark tones, enhanced by the satin texture of the petals. The fringed edges of this magnificent tulip add to its mysterious charm. The flowers last a long time and extend the tulip season until May.

In the world of flowers, there is truly nothing comparable to fringed tulips to spice up your spring garden with something unique. Ideal for borders, Tulipa 'Vincent van Gogh' will also create beautiful spots in perennial flower beds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose wallflowers for this purpose. Fringed tulips will bring a unique and refined touch to your bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.

After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heuchera, tiarella, brunnera, bleeding heart, or Euphorbia cyparissia at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves.

Red and orange colours are less common in the garden so take advantage of the wide range of tulips in these shades. For an elegant effect, these tulips will be enhanced by dark green foliage, such as a hedge of yews or boxwoods. Also consider dark foliage plants like Heuchera 'Obsidian'.
