Description

This 3 Dahlias collection for bouquets in warm tones brings together three varieties with double flowers, of the nymphaea and camellia type, which form a beautiful combination of ivory white, warm coral pink and intense purple pink. All three bloom abundantly for 4 months, from July until the first frost. These Dahlias have their rightful place in shrub and perennial beds, in pots on the terrace, and of course in homemade bouquets, with old roses for example.

This collection consists of:

-1x 'Karma Maarten Zwaan' Dahlia: nymphaea-like flowers of rare elegance, delicately colored ivory white, with wide, slightly incurved petals, 12 cm (5in) in diameter, carried by sturdy stems reaching 80-90 cm (32-35in) in height.

-1x 'Karma Fuchsiana' Dahlia: a superb plant that doesn't go unnoticed, with 10 cm (4in) flowers reminiscent of double nymphaeas, in intense coral pink to fuchsia color. The center is warmed by a light touch of orange. The combination of colors is exceptionally vibrant. Versatile, of intermediate size (80 cm (32in) tall), its sturdy stems do not require any staking.

-1x 'Le Baron' Dahlia: double, flattened flowers of 14 cm (6in), beautifully formed, reminiscent of camellias. With a satin texture, they are shiny, and a flamboyant violet, with reflections of fuchsia pink and dark pink. The tall floral stems measure up to 1.20 m (4ft) in height.

To encourage repeat flowering, make sure to remove faded flowers, or better yet, regularly make large colorful bouquets by combining them with other varieties. The dahlias that make up this collection are perfect in the company of white, pale pink, mauve, violet, or purple flowers. In your bouquets and in your beds, you can pair them with bedding roses, Asters, and campanulate for example.

A star plant in borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias confidently accompany the most beautiful flowers but are also appreciated alongside vegetable plants. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was first cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. But its poor gastronomic qualities relegated it to the rank of ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

Plant your dahlias in the springtime in soil that has been deeply worked and enriched, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil to fill without any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, pour one litre of water. Water regularly during the first 6 weeks to aid in rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered under protection. In November, the first frosts will blacken the foliage, which is the moment to dig them up. Carefully remove the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tuber can replenish its reserves. When the foliage is dry, cut the stems to 10 cm (4in) from the tuber. Spread your bulbs in a box on a newspaper. Store away from freezing temperatures in a dry, cool, and dark place.
