Description

A collection of 3 Dahlias that offer a rich palette of orange tones to the eye. Their flowers, with variable shapes and sizes, semi-cactus type, double or in pompoms, bloom abundantly for 4 months, from July to the first cold weather, on floral stems about 1m (3ft) tall. Synonymous with good mood, sweetness, but also with fantasy and refinement, these Dahlias work wonders in homemade bouquets, with white flowers, ferns and grasses, for example.

This collection is composed of:

-1x Dahlia 'Sylvia' ball: spherical flowers, 8cm (3in) in diameter, captivating, of a warm and gentle mandarin color. They consist of multiple petals arranged with millimeter precision, playing beautifully with light.

-1x Dahlia semi-cactus 'Omega': large flowers, about 20cm (8in) wide, globular, salmon pink with a touch of yellow. Dentate and curled petals or ligules only at their tips, giving them a pleasantly tousled appearance, intermediate between decorative dahlias and cactus dahlias.

-1x Dahlia fimbriata 'Deep Impact': flowers measuring up to 20cm (8in) in diameter, double, fringed, and an orange salmon color with traces of coppery pink or apricot. Despite their size, they show excellent resistance due to their structure that allows rainwater to flow off.

To promote floral regrowth, take care to cut faded flowers, or even better, regularly make large colorful bouquets by combining them with other varieties. With their orange-colored flowers, the dahlias that make up this collection go particularly well with white and pale yellow flowers, or even red ones. In flower beds, they will create warm and luminous spots in the company of Asters, for example, which bloom at the same time, as well as grasses at the height of their beauty or Echinaceas. They enhance bouquets until late in the season.

As the star of borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias confidently accompany the most beautiful flowers but are also appreciated alongside vegetable plants. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was first cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. But its poor taste assigned it the rank of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

Plant your dahlias in the springtime in deeply worked and enriched soil, for example with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill in without any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, pour one litre of water. Water regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts will blacken the foliage, which is the time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tuber can replenish its reserves. When the foliage is dry, cut the stems to 10 cm (4in) from the tuber. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store away from frost in a dry, cool, and dark place.
