Description
This Crinum powellii Collection brings together three different varieties that offer captivating summer flowerings above decorative foliage. Each variety has unique characteristics, in a harmony of white and pink. These are perennial plants that survive winter in the form of large bulbs about 15 cm in diameter, protruding from the ground. In spring, they produce an imposing clump of large, thick, ribbon-like, and arching bright green leaves. In summer, flower spikes with up to 15 flowers emerge from the foliage. These are large, slightly fragrant, wide-open trumpets. Their exotic appearance is particularly suitable for Mediterranean and seaside gardens, or for large pots.
The collection consists of:
1 x Crinum powellii 'Album': This variety stands out for its pure white flowers and tall stature, reaching up to 90 cm (35in) in height. Its foliage partially persists in winter.
1 x Crinum powellii 'Rosea': With its tender pink flowers, this crinum brings a touch of softness. Its height, similar to the 'Album' form, allows for a harmonious blend of soft colours.
1 x Crinum 'Striped Beauty': Unique for its exotic flowers, with turned-back petals, striped with dark pink on a white background, this variety is a true focal point. It reaches a height of 60 to 80 cm (24 to 32in).
Despite its exotic appearance, Crinum is hardy, in well-drained soil. This bulbous plant needs a rich, deep, moist soil in summer, and drier in winter. The plant, with slightly slow growth, becomes truly majestic over time. Its bulb, well protected under mulch, can withstand -12 °C (10.4°F). Plant Crinum powellii 'Album' and 'Rosea' in the background of your flower bed. The 'Striped Beauty' variety, with a more modest stature, should be planted in front. Maintain a spacing of 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) between each plant. In general, 3 to 4 plants per square metre create a dense and lush effect within 4 to 5 years.
Crinums powellii in this collection will pair well with Agapanthus 'Northern Star' and Dierama 'Dark Cerise', with their graceful trailing flower spikes. Add to the scene a Phormium 'Rainbow Sunrise', for its colourful and architectural foliage. In this ensemble, each plant enhances the others, while expressing its own beauty.

Planting and care
Crinum powelii likes rich, deep and moist soils during its growth period, becoming drier in winter. It appreciates a sunny exposure, but tolerates partial shade. In cooler regions, ideally plant the Crinum at the foot of a south-facing wall. Prepare a 60 cm (24in) deep hole, as this bulb roots deeply and strongly over time. Once it is planted, do not disturb it anymore. In milder regions, it will also thrive on the edge of a pond, in moist soil. In any case, choose a sheltered location away from the wind. Plant the base of the bulb at a depth of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in), with the 'neck' appearing at the surface of the soil. Space the bulbs 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) apart. The soil should be loose, well-drained, and enriched with compost. In regions with harsh winters, provide a thick layer of leaves or straw. In dry summer regions, mulch to retain moisture and water regularly. In hot and cool soil conditions, the bulb will root and be able to flower within two to three years. Prune the foliage after the first frost. Protect young shoots from gastropods. If necessary, manually remove mealybugs with an alcohol-soaked cotton swab.
Bring potted plants indoors to a cold greenhouse during winter.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
