I have received the promised rhizomes, they looked to be in very good condition. I have just planted them and now I am waiting for them to grow...

Description

Canna 'Wyoming' bears vibrant orange flowers that stand out from its beautiful large purple leaves. It reaches a height of 1.5m (5ft), making it the perfect choice for the back of a flower bed.

It will bloom from July until the first frost. Consider planting it in a flower bed with about ten bulbs of the same variety or mixed with green-leaved varieties. Be careful to dig up the bulbs before the first frost, as they are susceptible to cold.

Planting and care

Plant in the ground after the last frost. Plant in moist but well-drained soil. If necessary, lighten the soil with turf or sand. Cover the bulbs with 5cm (2in) of soil. Space the bulbs 40cm (16in) apart. Apply organic fertiliser at planting and at least once a month. Water regularly so that the soil never completely dries out.

You can speed up their cycle, just like dahlias, by planting them in pots indoors in February, protected from frost, and then transplanting them to the garden when the weather gets warmer.

Cannas do not like the cold so should spend winter protected from frost. The bulbs should be dug up and stored away at the first frost, keeping them dry and cool. A little bit of turf can be used for storage.
