Description

These Cannas, with their impressive height of 1.5m (5ft) and their vibrant colours, are ideal in the background of a flowerbed to give an exotic feel to the garden.

We offer you a collection of 3 Canna varieties: 3 'Brilliant'  with red/green foliage; 3 'En avant' with red/green foliage speckled in yellow, and 3 'Wyoming' with orange/purple foliage.

They will bloom from July until the first frosts. Consider planting in a clump of around ten bulbs in a flowerbed. Be careful to dig up the bulbs before the first frosts, as they are sensitive to the cold.

Planting and care

Cannas don't like the cold and must spend the winter protected from frost. In open ground, they should only be planted after the last frost. They will also need to be brought inside before the first frosts arrive and the bulbs kept dry and cool, for example in a box of dry soil. Plant them in moist but well-drained soil (if necessary, lighten with some leaf mould, compost or sand). Cover with 5cm (2in) of soil, and maintain a spacing of 40cm (16in) between the bulbs. Apply organic fertiliser at planting and at least once a month. Water regularly so that the soil never completely dries out. You can also speed up their cycle, as with Dahlias, by planting them in pots under frost-free shelter as early as February, and then transplanting them to the garden in the warmer months (from June in northern Europe).
