Planting and care

Plant the corms of Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora ‘Dusky Maiden’ in spring, from March to May depending on the region, when severe frosts are no longer a concern. Position them in full sun, or possibly in light partial shade in a hot climate, at a depth of 8 to 10 cm and spaced about 15 cm apart. The essential point is the soil: it must be fertile, humus-bearing, loose, well-drained, but retain a little coolness during the summer.
This variety does not tolerate heavy, waterlogged soils in winter, which cause the corms to rot, but it also flowers less well in overly dry and poor soils. In clay soil, it is better to lighten the planting with coarse sand, fine gravel, or well-rotted compost.
Once established, the plant requires little care; water only during dry periods to support flowering, remove spent flower stems if necessary, and allow the foliage to yellow before cutting it back, so that the corms can replenish their reserves.
In cold regions, winter mulching is beneficial, especially in the first few years, as its hardiness is around -10 to -12 °C in well-drained soil.
