More information

This Gloriosa Duo brings together two varieties of climbing lilies. The first produces spectacular bright red flowers edged with yellow, while the second offers flowers in a vibrant lemon yellow. Both bloom in the summer, adorned with curled petals and long prominent stamens. These tuberous climbing plants should be planted in a sunny to partially shaded position in rich, well-drained soil. They can reach a height of 2m (7ft) for the 'Rothschildiana' and up to 1.60m (5ft) for the 'Lutea' variety. Ideal for exotic gardens, these tender plants can climb through other vegetation or be grown in pots in a conservatory. The plants are available as tubers.

Description

The Duo Gloriosa offers a spectacular combination of colours and shapes in the summer. The Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana', with its bright red flowers edged in yellow, and the Gloriosa lutea 'Lutea', with its bright lemon shades, express the beauty of climbing lilies. These deciduous plants bloom in the summer, bringing a tropical touch to any setting. Their lush, glossy green foliage serves as a backdrop to their exotic flowers. These climbing plants thrive in rich, well-drained soil. They are suited for outdoor cultivation in very mild climates. Elsewhere, they are planted in pots to be overwintered in a conservatory.

The duo consists of:

x 1 Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana': This variety stands out with its uniquely vibrant red flowers with yellow edges. Its vegetation can climb up to 2m (7ft).

x 1 Gloriosa lutea 'Lutea': This plant offers bright lemon-yellow flowers, slightly smaller than those of the 'Rothschildiana', but equally spectacular. Slightly more compact than the previous variety, it reaches a height of between 1.50m (5ft) and 1.60m (5ft).

Labelled separately.

These Gloriosa lilies are planted in the spring in rich, light, well-drained soil, most often in pots. Their stump does not tolerate freezing temperatures well, and will be destroyed below -4°C (24.8°F). They thrive in direct sunlight or partial shade. Leave about 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) between each tuber. It should be laid flat and covered with 5 cm (2in) of soil. The flowering will be more abundant if you curve each vine by winding it around its support.

Make your Gloriosa climb on a small structure, in a pot or in the ground. In the garden, you can surround them with ferns for their contrasting foliage, daylilies with yellow, orange or red flowers, and hostas for their large leaves, creating an exotic and lush setting.

Planting and care

The Gloriosa lily can be planted from March to May, with the bulb laid flat in a 20 cm (8in) pot, covered with 5 cm (2in) of soil, either alone or preferably in pairs. Water regularly and keep at a temperature above 12° (53.6°F). Apply fertiliser once a week, as the plant is quite demanding. You can move the pot outdoors from June onwards. Remember to bend the liana by wrapping it around its support, as this will stimulate flowering. At the end of flowering, stop watering and store the plant until the following spring.

You can also plant it directly in the ground, but only after the last frost, in a sheltered and sunny spot with moist soil. Don't forget to dig up and store the bulbs in early autumn, storing them in a crate covered with turf.
