Description

Hedychium forrestii is a superb perennial that we use without moderation in our exotic garden. It boasts strong, slender, yet flexible stems that carry long and narrow leaves along their entire length, resembling a fishbone. It thrives in rich and deep soil, which remains moist during the growing season. It requires a warm exposure, as the fragrant flowers bloom late in our garden. In hotter regions, they will appear as early as August. It grows slowly with its powerful underground rootstock, to form a majestic and spectacular clump.

Planting and care

It is reputed to be non-hardy due to its poor cold resistance. However, we have left the stumps in the ground for about 9 to 10 years and none have died so far! At the first frost, we cut back the foliage to the ground and then mulch the stumps with a thick litter layer of dead leaves. This has always been sufficient. You can also dig up the stump and treat it like cannas.

Stumps are only shipped in plugs from March to May.
