Description

Pleione forrestii is the only terrestrial orchid with lemon-yellow to pale-yellow flowers with a purple-spotted heart. It has long been sought after by collectors for its unusual colour.

In winter, its pseudobulbs produce a single, beautifully pleated green leaf. In early spring, beautiful delicately scented flowers, beautiful lemon yellow flowers bloom with a trumpet-shaped lip, spotted with reddish-brown and fringed edges. It is smaller than other varieties; the flowers measure about 4-5cm (2in) long.

Pleione forrestii originates from China and is not very hardy. Growing it outdoors is quite technical and best suited to experienced enthusiasts.

When planted in the ground, this small orchid likes soil that is not too chalky, humus-rich, moist, light, well-drained and in a semi-shaded position. In winter, add mulch or a cloche to protect the bulbs. Pot cultivation is better.

Tip: After flowering, it is essential not to let the soil dry out, as this is when the pseudobulb grows and multiplies.

Planting and care

Pleione forrestii should be planted in early spring in a pocket of good, light and porous potting soil, and covered with wood chips. The soil should never be dry or waterlogged. Mulch with dead leaves in winter or cover with a cloche. In a pot, a mix of potting soil (specifically for sowing or orchids) and pumice with good drainage will ensure beautiful flowering. Bring potted plants indoors to a cold greenhouse in winter.
