Description

Roscoea cautleyoides is the only roscoea to bloom yellow.

Originally from the mountains of China, Roscoea cautleyoides is a very hardy plant, belonging to the ginger family.

Long, grass-like leaves measuring 30-35cm (12-14in) high emerge from its fleshy crown in spring. In late summer, Roscoea bears pale yellow tubular flowers resembling miniature orchids gathered in dense spikes on the tips of its stems.

It is easy to grow and thrives in partial shade, in rich humus soils, that are moist and humid. Grow it alongside rodgersias, cimicifugas, and hostas.

Planting and care

Plant your Roscoea cautleyoides at a depth of 6 to 8 cm (2 to 3in), in neutral to acidic soil (hydrangea, rhododendron, azalea beds) in full sun or partial shade, 10 cm (4in) apart. They are very hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -12°C (10.4°F) in light soil, but beyond that, a thick mulch should be applied. You can also grow them in pots, 3 per 18 cm (7in) pot, preferably in partial shade.
