Description

Roscoea purpurea, formerly known as Roscoea procera, is an original bulb that will delight orchid lovers with its beautiful purple flowers striped with white, similar to orchids.

Also known as "False Orchid" or "Orchid Ginger," this 40cm (16in) tall plant is a perennial with fleshy roots. It forms a clump of strong, tubular stems with deciduous, linear leaves, 15 to 25cm (6 to 10in) long and dark green. In June it has 5cm (2in) diameter violet flowers, striped with white and arranged in short spikes, consisting of a long, curvilinear tube and three petals, with the upper one forming a helmet and the lower one a lip.

Originally from the Himalayas, Roscoea purpurea grows in humid, slightly acidic, well-drained soil, in partial shade. The young shoots take time to emerge.

Roscoea Purpurea blends perfectly with rodgersias, cimifugas, and hostas in any ericaceous soil bed.
