An excellent perennial primrose whose very double flowers resemble mini-roses of an almost pure ivory white. It blooms for 3 months in spring, even in shade. Superb in a pot or in a border. Belarina primroses are remarkable both for their vigour and their vibrant colours. These latest generation varieties are more robust and easier to maintain than the old double-flowered selections.

Description

The 'Belarina Snow' double primrose is undoubtedly the whitest of the 'Belarina', as its name suggests. Its fully double flowers are barely tinged with cream when they open, and they hide a small yellow spot in their throat. They bloom in generous clusters on a lush and compact foliage that often persists in winter. These lovely double Belarina primroses, which are very perennial, excel in pots, containers, borders, and flower beds. Offering a multitude of colours and a burst of optimism at the end of winter, they even grow in shade and have a long flowering period.

Primula vulgaris (acaulis) Belarina Snow is a herbaceous perennial plant in the primrose family, derived from the common primrose that is commonly found in our meadows and woodlands. It belongs to a series of recent selections that stand out for their double corollas, vibrant colours, and extended flowering duration. These floriferous and hardy plants form in a few months lovely clumps of dense foliage, 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) tall and 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) wide. They develop rosettes of wavy and veined leaves, which remain evergreen in winter. 'Belarina Snow' produces 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) diameter flowers that appear for 4 to 5 weeks. They are highly double, resembling small roses, gathered in perfect clusters. They are beautiful, but also slightly fragrant and borne on short villous peduncles surrounded by luxuriant foliage.

Garden primroses are cultivated as biennials. Perfect for pots, containers, flower beds, and even shade in fertile and moist soil, they deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. They herald the return of spring alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. They are ideal under deciduous trees, in rockeries, and in short grass meadows, where they mingle with snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, either in pots, containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

The 'Belarina Snow' double primrose plug plants can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible, ideally in September-October. If the intended location is not ready yet or the conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good potting soil for flowering plants (such as geranium potting soil) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, lightweight and well-draining. The top of the plug plant should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can quickly dry out. However, be careful not to overwater! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, the 'Belarina' perennial primroses are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, at the end of February or beginning of March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week when watering. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Once the flowering is over, container-grown plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
