The double flowers of this primrose, resemble small roses gathered in generous bouquets on a compact tuft of beautiful embossed leaves. From a vanilla yellow when they bloom, they fade to ivory white when fully open. Star plants of English cottages, double primroses find their way back to our gardens, in pots, in flower boxes, in flowerbeds and borders. They even grow in shade.

Description

The 'Belarina Vanilla' Double Primrose is a truly delightful selection, with its very double flowers gathered in large cream-coloured clusters with a hint of vanilla on a bed of beautiful embossed leaves. The show continues for several weeks in spring. The lovely double primroses had almost disappeared, but they are making a comeback in the form of new, more vigorous and more floriferous selections in our gardens, terraces, and balconies. Offering a multitude of colours and a burst of optimism at the end of winter, they even grow in the shade and bloom for a long time.

Primula vulgaris (acaulis) Belarina Vanilla is a herbaceous perennial plant of the primrose family, derived from the common primrose commonly found in our meadows and woodlands. It is part of a series of recent creations that stand out for their doubled corollas, vibrant colours, and extended flowering period. These are floriferous and hardy plants that form pretty, dense clumps of foliage, 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) tall and 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) wide in just a few months. They develop rosettes of embossed and veined evergreen leaves. 'Belarina Vanilla' produces 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) wide flowers that appear for 4 to 5 weeks. They are highly double, resembling small roses, gathered in perfect clusters. When they first open, they are a very soft yellow colour, then they fade almost to white. They are beautiful, but also slightly fragrant and carried by short villous peduncles surrounded by luxuriant foliage.

Garden primroses are perennial plants grown as biennials. Perfect in pots, containers, flower beds, and borders, and they even grow in the shade in fertile, moist soil, they deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. They announce the return of spring alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. They are ideal under deciduous trees, in rockeries, and short grass meadows, where they mingle with snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Note: Attention, our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

The 'Belarina Vanilla' double primrose plug plans can be planted in containers and flower pots or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible, ideally upon receipt, in September-October. If the planned location is not ready yet or if the conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can let them grow in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In containers and flower pots, use a good soil for flowering plants (such as geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, which is lightweight and well-draining. The top of the plug plant should be level with the soil. Water generously upon planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plans can quickly dry out. However, be careful with excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered area. Do not water during freezing periods.

The 'Belarina' perennial primroses are highly floriferous and fast-growing plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week when watering. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Once the flowering is over, container plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
