Description

Tradescantia sillamontana 'Variegata', a lovely variegated form of the Woolly Spiderwort, is an elegant and easy-going houseplant. It is undemanding and fits perfectly into modern or more classic interiors, whether in hanging baskets or pots. It's a charming companion even if you're not a houseplant specialist.

Belonging to the Commelinaceae familyTradescantia sillamontana 'Variegata' is a horticultural variety of Tradescantia sillamontana species, native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico. This perennial with a slightly trailing habit forms a low clump 20 to 40 cm in height, with a spread at least equivalent. Its ovate, thick leaves, covered in white hairs, display stunning longitudinal white and green stripes that vary in intensity depending on light conditions. Between May-June and September, this plant produces dark pink three-petalled flowers, which typically bloom in the morning. Indoors, its evergreen foliage remains decorative year-round, provided it is given the right growing conditions.
Indoors, Tradescantia sillamontana 'Variegata' thrives in a bright environment without direct sunlight, which could scorch its delicate foliage. A spot near an east or west-facing window is ideal. This variety prefers well-drained soil, composed of light potting mix and sand to prevent waterlogging. Watering should be moderate, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering as the plant enters a dormant phase. It is not very hardy, cannot tolerate temperatures below 4°C and is best grown in areas protected from cold draughts. It will thrive in bright rooms such as a living room, kitchen, or conservatory.

The Woolly Spiderwort 'Variegata' adapts equally well to hanging baskets or traditional pots, offering various decorative options. In a hanging basket, its trailing stems create an elegant decorative effect, perfect for brightening up a corner of the room. In a pot, it forms a compact clump that easily fits on a shelf or coffee table. To showcase this plant, pair it, for example, with Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum', with its long variegated leaves.
