Superb flowers that almost resemble peonies. Be sure to water them well, otherwise the stems will bend. Unfortunately, I couldn't admire them with the anemones I had ordered because the bulbs rotted.

Delicious fully double flowers, reminiscent of cherry pink peonies with a white rose centre. Excellent performance in the garden as well as in a vase. Description

The Late Tulip 'Double Sugar' embodies the epitome of refinement, with its large double and remarkably fragrant flowers. Each flower resembles a peony composed of ruffled petals in a range of pink tones. The deeper cherry colour on the periphery brightens to pale pink to white in the centre, with occasional touches of green, cream, and pale yellow. Each flower is unique, and its appearance changes over time. Not only are they beautiful, but they are also very long-lasting in the garden and in a vase, and they emit a unique fragrance with very sweet notes. This superb variety brings the tulip season to a beautiful close.

The 'Double Sugar' Tulip belongs to the lily family. Originally horticultural, developed in the Netherlands in 2008, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', which are characterized by their very double and crumpled flowers, carried on sturdy stems. 'Double Sugar' is of medium size (40-45cm (16-18in)) and its flower is of a beautiful size, very double and well open.  It shows excellent durability. Its colour palette includes cherry pink and candy pink complemented by white-pink and cream with a hint of pale green. The fragrance adds an additional charm, and it is a true delight, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase, gradually shedding their petals like a shower of pearly petals. The flowering starts relatively late, in May, when other tulips have long since faded.

With their varied, tender or vibrant colours, opulent and naive flowers, late double tulips bring fantasy and romance to pots or sunny gardens, alongside the most beautiful spring blooms or pastel tulips like 'Angelique' and 'Maureen Double' or, conversely, dark ones like 'Queen of Night'. When designing your flowerbeds, remember to consider the height and flowering period, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for bouquets, as they last a long time in a vase, and it is there that the fragrant flowers of 'Double Sugar' will bring the greatest satisfaction.

Planting and care

Preferably place the 'Double Sugar' tulips in a sunny spot from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also place them in a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in a light, fertile, and well-drained soil, loosened to a depth of 15cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch; remove the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
