More information

A fringed tulip, as elegant as it is unique: its large and beautiful flower, edged with delicate lace, is more or less streaked with deep red on a creamy white background. Carried by a long stem of 55cm (22in), it stands out in flower beds and creates a sensation in bouquets. It is a reliable variety that faithfully returns every year at the beginning of May, without degenerating.

Description

The Tulip 'Carousel' is an excellent fringed tulip variety, both beautiful and reliable in the garden. It proudly displays its delicately and randomly flamed deep red ivory dress in flowerbeds. Original and very pleasing, it adds a personal touch to flowerbeds and flower bouquets. This semi-late variety pairs remarkably well with Euphorbias, blue irises, and pink or white Chinese peonies.

The Dentate Tulip 'Carousel' belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin and registered in the Netherlands in 1995, it is classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is having finely dentate petal edges. This tulip will reach a height of 55cm (22in) when in bloom. Flowering generally occurs in early May, but it may be slightly later depending on the climate. The flowers are simple, with a classic cup shape, slightly open, and 7cm (3in) tall. They are beautifully bicoloured, in ivory white and deep magenta red. The white border of the petals is finely cut. The flowers last a long time and extend the tulip season until May. The foliage turns yellow, then dries up some time after flowering. This 'Carousel' tulip faithfully returns each year under good growing conditions if protected from rodents. For example, use a plastic bulb basket.

In the world of flowers, there is truly nothing comparable to dentate tulips to spice up your garden in spring with something unique. The 'Carousel' Tulip is a very beautiful flower for perennial beds and bouquets. Plant the bulbs in small groups of 5, alongside plants that will fill the space after flowering. To accompany it, choose, for example, white tulips ('Snow Crystal'), pink ('Pink Diamond'), or purple ('Negrita' Double) tulips. Create a lovely scene with Purple Wood Spurge and 'Delta Blues' iris. By choosing dentate tulips, you will bring a unique touch to your bouquets. Only put a very small amount of water in their vase, just enough to cover the bottom. Additionally, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting will be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add uncomposted manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Carousel' tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded position. Once the flowering is over, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them. We recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, and Euphorbias in the foreground of your flowerbeds, as their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and, during the season, they will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves. Red and orange are less common in the garden. Let's take advantage of the wide range of tulips in these colours. For an elegant effect, these tulips will be enhanced by dark green foliage, such as a hedge of Yews or Boxwoods. Also consider dark foliage like 'Obsidian' Heuchera.
