Description

Agapanthus 'Midnight Blue' blooms from July to August. It offers beautiful globular 15cm (6in) diameter umbels. The flowers, trumpet-shaped, are almost black when in bud and deep blue when fully open. Cut and placed in a vase, they will bring freshness to your home. The foliage of this Agapanthus is evergreen in mild climate. It remains decorative throughout the year.

Not very hardy (up to -5°C (23°F)), plant Agapanthus in a large pot placed on a sunny terrace so that it blooms abundantly. In the ground, prefer a warm exposure in a perennial bed, mass planting, or border. It can even be grown alone. It is a plant that thrives by the seaside, in an English cottage, and even in a city garden.

At maturity, Agapanthus 'Midnight Blue' can reach a height of 60cm (24in) and a width of 40cm (16in). This perennial is native to South Africa.

Planting and care

The 'Midnight Blue' Agapanthus is cultivated in full sun in a warm location, in a protected area facing south. It withstands drought well. Place it in a soil that is rich and moist, but above all, very well-drained in winter. Water Agapanthus regularly during the growth period (twice a week). However, avoid watering them while the plant is dormant. In winter, Agapanthus fears excessive moisture and does not like waterlogged soil. That is why you should mulch the base with a layer of dead leaves, about 20cm (8in) thick, and cover them with a wire mesh to prevent wind damage. Also, snow is very effective in protecting against excessive moisture and cold. If in a pot, bring the plant indoors for shelter. When planting, place it 30cm (12in) deep in a pot with leaf soil and compost, as the roots are fleshy. Once established in the ground, avoid disturbing Agapanthus. Remove faded leaves in autumn. Cut off the flowerless stems so that the plant does not exhaust itself producing seeds.
