Description

The Pendula tuberous begonia six colour mix will enhance your balconies, terraces, or hanging planters. The plants, with a trailing habit, are adorned with numerous brightly coloured flowers, all summer long, even until the onset of autumn. They can also be used to decorate baskets, fill flower boxes, or enrich seasonal displays in partial shade.

The Pendula begonia belongs to the Begoniaceae family. It is a tuberous hybrid (Begonia × tuberhybrida), selected for its trailing habit. The origin of this plant is horticultural: it results from cross-breeding carried out in the 19th century between different South American species, notably Begonia boliviensis, B. pearcei, and B. veitchii. This mix combines six different cultivars, designated by their colour.
It is a herbaceous perennial plant due to its tuber, reaching 20 to 30 cm in height with a spread of 30-40 cm, sometimes a bit more when hanging. Its habit is trailing, flexible, with fleshy and brittle stems bearing dense foliage. The medium to dark green leaves are asymmetrical, heart-shaped with toothed edges, 5 to 10 cm long. Their texture is slightly glossy. The stems are thin, fleshy, and reddish at the base. The root system consists of a rounded, flattened tuber, serving as a storage organ; it allows the plant to regenerate in spring after a dry winter rest.
The single or semi-double to double flowers measure 4 to 6 cm in diameter. They are composed of broad, silky petals arranged in a regular corolla. The mix combines the 6 most luminous colours of the Pendula series: bright red, pink, yellow, pure white, orange, and salmon. The generous flowering lasts from June to September, sometimes until the first chills of October if the weather remains mild.

Use these trailing begonias in hanging planters, tall containers, or bowls in partial shade. These plants require regular watering and feeding. To accompany them, consider plants with a semi-trailing or upright habit, such as Regatta mix trailing lobeliatrailing Fuchsia Blue Angel, or Calibrachoa Million Bells Trailing Ice. You can also complement with the silvery foliage of Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’.

The trailing forms of begonias from Bolivian lines were popularised from the end of the 19th century in hanging baskets in Europe. These displays were prized for decorating shaded verandas and covered galleries.

Planting and care

Plant your Begonia Pendula 6 colour mix in a shaded or lightly sunny position, in light and moist soil, rich in humus. Begonias dislike overly heavy soil; lighten your earth with compost and sand. Plant after the last frosts, one per pot of around twenty cm, or spaced 25 cm apart in open ground. Position the tuber with the concave (hollow) part facing upwards, then cover with 5 cm of soil. As with Dahlias, you can accelerate their cycle by planting them from February onwards, in sheltered pots, moving them outside in May. Water very regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting, then twice a month during the season. Remove faded flowers.
Dig up the tubers before the first frosts, and store them in a little peat, in a dry and cool place, during the winter. It is a shade plant that will grow better if it benefits from a few hours of sunlight per day. It is quite sensitive to powdery mildew and nematodes and requires regular, but not excessive, watering.
