The seeds have germinated successfully. The flowering occurred only in the second year, so the young plant survived the winter without any issues.

Description

Shasta Daisy Alaska or Chrysanthemum x superbum or Leucanthemum x superbum is a gorgeous herbaceous perennial with a pure white collar of petals and a cheery bright yellow centre. It is the classic variety of wild daisies.

This member of the family Asteraceae is native to North America. English speakers affectionately call it 'Shasta daisy' because it was on Mount Shasta, that these wild daisies were first discovered.

The flower heads of this little wildling are made up of a collar of pure white florets arranged around a cheery, bright yellow centre. The glossy green deciduous leaves are alternate. They are lanceolate and deeply toothed. The plant's habit is very bushy and upright. Each plant will reach 80 cm in height and 60 cm in width. It will give best results when planted in a moist, neutral soil, although it is quite tolerant of slightly acidic or calcareous soils. Moreover, it is very hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -15 °C.

This pretty Chrysanthemum will bring candour and freshness to summer beds with its flowers that bloom from June to August. It will look lovely in the company of oriental poppies, in a cottage garden or planted in many small touches in a meadow. It is a very suitable cut flower with a long vase-life that look beautiful in bouquets. Pinch back the stems at the end of spring. Then remove the faded flowers to encourage repeat blooming all summer long and to give the plants a more compact habit.

Planting and care

You can sow the seeds under cover from March to April. But it is easier to wait a little longer and direct sow them in their final position, under half a cm of soil, from April to June, as soon as the temperatures have reached 18 °C outside. Thin out seedlings to 40 cm apart. It blooms heavily from June to August. It will take about 16 days for the young shoots to appear. Pinch back the growing points at the end of spring, then remove the wilted flowers to encourage repeat blooming all summer long and to give the plants a more compact habit.
